NVC golf make prepartion for NorCal tourney

It’s a one-day, 36-hole marathon, starting this morning at 7:30 a.m. on the Legends West Course at Diablo Grande Resort and Golf Club in Patterson (Stanislaus County). It’s walking all day, from tee to green, hole to hole, shot after shot. It’s a hilly course, making the journey around the par-72, 7,112-yard course, designed by Jack Nicklaus and Gene Sarazen, a real battle.
Fortunately for Duncan and Salum, Tiger Woods is Ready for The Championship they were able to play a practice round at Diablo Grande last week. But they rode in a golf cart, so they didn’t get to experience the unusually long walk from greens to tee boxes. The top four teams and top six individuals (not on a qualifying team) will advance to the state championship on May 16 at Kings Country Club in Hanford. Today’s event, which has players starting from the first and 11th tees, will be conducted by the Northern California Golf Association. The afternoon round will begin at 1:30 p.m., creating about a 10-hour day of golf.“All throughout high school I tried as hard as I could to make it to NorCals,” said Duncan, a Vintage High graduate and a freshman for the Storm. “I’m excited to play in a bigger tournament that means a little bit more. You feel more of a competitive edge to it.”Reedley College, Santa Rosa Junior College, Chabot College, American River College, Cabrillo College. Butte College, West Hills College Lemoore, Folsom Lake College, Foothill College, Delta College and Monterey Peninsula College make up the field of teams. Duncan is the second individual and Salum is the sixth individual out of the Big 8 Conference to advance to NorCals. The MVP of the Big 8 Conference was Steven Warne of Santa Rosa.Duncan tees off today at 8:40 a.m. and Salum starts at 9:20 a.m. Salum shot a 9-over-par 79 and Napa Valley finished 10th in the season-opening Stanford Invitational at the Stanford Golf Course. Thirteen teams — including all eight from the Big 8 Conference — played in the event in February.“Justin is a good ball hitter and he has a very good swing,” said Wiechers.Salum’s lowest scores of the season are 72 and 73. In high school, he qualified for the CIF North Coast Section Championships.“If he has a good day, he can make it to state,” Wiechers said last week at Eagle Vines Vineyards and Golf Club.Salum played well in the first half of the season and is looking to make some corrections with his driver, so that his tee shots find the fairways.
